Taebaeksan National Park (태백산)

Taebaeksan Mountain is a majestic mountain range located in the eastern part of the Korean Peninsula. As the backbone of the Korean Peninsula, Taebaeksan has held significant cultural and spiritual importance for centuries. The name “Taebaeksan” translates to “Great White Mountain,” referring to the mountain’s impressive height and the often snow-covered peaks.

Designated as a national park in 2016, Taebaeksan offers visitors a chance to experience the pristine natural beauty of Korea. With its towering peaks, deep valleys, and lush forests, Taebaeksan is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. The park is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including rare species of plants and animals.

Throughout history, Taebaeksan has been considered a sacred mountain and a place of worship. Numerous temples and shrines have been built on the mountain, reflecting the deep spiritual connection between the Korean people and nature. Visitors can explore these historical sites and learn about the rich cultural heritage of the region.

One of the most popular attractions in Taebaeksan National Park is the Cheonjedan Altar, located at the summit. This ancient altar was used for sacrificial rituals and is considered a sacred site. Hiking to the Cheonjedan Altar offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The image of Taebaeksan Mountain's Cheonjedan Mountain was so strong that I decided to go there someday.Comparative work: Starting from the Yuilsa parking lot where you can climb quickly - Yuilsa Temple - Taebaeksang Janggunbong Peak - Taebaeksan Mountain Cheonjedan - Mangyeongsa Temple course took 3 hours and 20 minutes. The only restrooms with running water are Yuilsan Parking Lot and Manggyeongsa Temple, so please plan your course well. For the course from the Yuilsa parking lot, we recommend going up the forest road if possible and entering the hiking trail at the Yuilsa rest area. There are three altars, the Janggunbong Altar, the Cheonje Altar, and the Hadan Altar, so I recommend checking them all out.I think it would be a good idea to go through Danjong's monument, wash your hands at Mangyeongsa Temple's Yongjeong, take a breather, and go down.

My mother was unable to come down from the top of the mountain due to an injured leg joint, but she was able to come down safely with the help of the national park staff. Thank you to the staff.

Visit in December 2023.One of Korea's representative winter mountains. The ridge leading from the snow-covered Janggunbong Peak to Cheonjedan has a spectacular view of Sanggodae. The mountain slopes are not too steep, so it is good to visit with a light heart.(Spets and crampons are essential for winter hiking!)It’s very windy at the top, so be prepared to keep warm!

Hiked 3 peaks on Christmas Day. It was a 7 hour hike in the snow, quite tough for a wegugin not used to Korean mountains but a great day.So glad I had crampons!Hard ascent to Somunsubong then a ridge walk to Munsubong and then a final ascent to Cheonjedan. The 4.4km descent into Danggol square was ok but felt long in the snow and we got to the car park just after sunset.

One of my favorite national parks in all of Korea, this place has it all. Great hiking trails, beautiful views, lots of history, and great times regardless of the season of the year. Definitely a great place to visit in Gangwon-do (especially in late fall/winter). Highly recommended

Beautiful mountain a short bus ride from Taebaek-si. The views from up top are amazing. The trail is very easy to follow and is doable for most experience levels.
