Cheongnyeongpo (청령포)

Cheongryeongpo is a historically significant island located in Yeongwol County, South Korea. It’s most famous for being the place of exile for King Danjong, the sixth king of the Joseon Dynasty. Forced to abdicate the throne at a young age by his uncle, Sejo, King Danjong was sent to this remote island where he spent his final days.

Surrounded by the serene waters of the North Han River, Cheongryeongpo offers visitors a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. With its towering cliffs and lush greenery, the island provides a stunning natural backdrop to the tragic tale of King Danjong. Visitors can explore the various historical sites within the island, including the former residence of King Danjong, the viewing platform from which he gazed longingly towards the capital, and the sorrowful pine tree that stands as a poignant reminder of his exile.

The island’s serene beauty and historical significance make it a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists. Visitors can take a boat ride to the island and explore its various trails and attractions. Cheongryeongpo is a place where one can reflect on the fragility of human life and the enduring power of history.

Yeongwol Cheongnyeongpo. The place where King Danjong was exiled. There were fewer people than a few years ago, and a deck was installed. Perhaps because it was a hot day, there weren't many tourists, which was good for us, but it was a bit unfamiliar to be free in a cultural heritage site where you can learn about history. In the early 2000s, you had to wait in line to board a boat that lasted about 5 minutes...Yeongwol is a fun place with many museums, enjoyable natural scenery, and cultural heritage.

When I visited 15 years ago, I couldn't go in without seeing the ship. I visited this time, and unlike back then, the location of the boat was different and many nearby facilities were renovated.

It is the place of exile for King Danjong (initially called Nosangun), the grandson of King Sejong, the crown prince of King Munjong, and the king after Munjong's death. I can't tell you how sad it is to see the young king's fear and bitterness transferred to a corner of my heart.

It was such a beautiful experience visiting this place. It's quiet and meaningful, and just walking around taking in the surroundings and the views is a healing experience in itself. Another plus is, being a fan of variety show 2Days1Night, I love that I got to visit a place where the cast membees got to film!

Spending my last weekend here and felt super calm! It was like a gateaway from my hustle bustle daily routine. I felt so refreshed, the view was very nice that I could see this place directly. Hope to visit again someday.

I guess rail ways have made it close but considering this is where a former king was exiled to, it seems too close to Seoul. Rich in nature (I'm sure was more splendid back in the day) and very calming. His story is a sad one so retracing his footsteps give him a little bit more meaning

If you have a time for you to stop by and look around, it's ok, you have to go there. It's a historic place, but it's also a good place to enjoy the scenery. you have to go on a boat, but it's good to enjoy it because it doesn't take long to get on a boat.
