Sojungbang Falls

Sojungbang Falls in Jeju Island is a unique coastal waterfall where freshwater directly plunges into the sea, offering a refreshing and scenic natural spectacle.

정방폭포 (Jeongbang Waterfall) is a unique and must-see natural wonder located near Seogwipo City on the southern coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. What makes Jeongbang Waterfall so special is that it is the only waterfall in Korea that flows directly into the ocean.

Key Features:

Direct Ocean Fall: Unlike most waterfalls that cascade into rivers or lakes, the waters of Jeongbang Waterfall plunge directly into the powerful waves of the East China Sea, creating a dramatic and breathtaking spectacle.

Two Majestic Streams: The waterfall is often formed by two distinct streams of water that cascade down a sheer cliff face approximately 23 meters (75 feet) high. The volume of water can vary depending on rainfall.

Surrounding Coastal Scenery: The cliffs surrounding the waterfall are composed of striking black columnar joints, formed by the rapid cooling of lava. This geological feature adds to the dramatic beauty of the area. Lush vegetation also clings to the cliffs, creating a vibrant contrast with the dark rock and white water.

Legend of the Dragon: Local legend tells of a dragon residing beneath the waterfall. The name “Jeongbang” is said to have originated from a story about a servant named Jeongbang who, upon the command of a Chinese emperor, failed to find an elixir of youth on Hallasan Mountain and instead was captivated by the beauty of the waterfall.

Easy Access: The waterfall is relatively easy to access via a well-maintained path and stairs leading down from the parking area. The walk offers scenic views along the way.

Year-Round Attraction: Jeongbang Waterfall is beautiful to visit throughout the year, with the surrounding foliage changing with the seasons.

Nearby Attractions: It’s conveniently located near other popular attractions in the Seogwipo area, making it easy to incorporate into a day trip.

Smallest of them three falls but worth the actual path walks before you even get close to the falls. It's a safe walk and the setup is an easy walk. Take your time rather than trying to rush around to get there like a short stop tourist. We strolled through the walkways taking in what has to offer. It's absolutely beautiful 😍 then the small waterfall. Just the sound of splashes, standing around listening to natural water beating away was worthwhile. Two thumbs up 👍 👍

Nice small waterfall, facing the sea. You can get really close and there are no barriers that block a amazing photo.Free entrance. Not the same as the big waterfall nearby. Confusing on the map, but indeed there are two different waterfalls. A small one and a big one. This is the small one.
