After hearing the news that the heavy snow in Gangwon-do had lifted for several days, I decided to go to Mt. Worak.I went there in the fall of 2023 and it was my first time on a winter mountain, so I was a little worried and started hiking at the Deokjusa Temple departure time at 8 o'clock.I didn't wear crampons from the beginning, but as I started to notice the rock-carved Buddha, I put on crampons and started hiking. On the Deokjusa Temple course, you can see two places, the Maaebong Stairway Hell and the Yeongbong Stairway Hell. The Dongchang Bridge course requires you to struggle with stairs the entire way up, but there is a mountain goat observatory, so if you are lucky, you can see them hunting. If you want to see mountain goats, the best way is to go to the Seocheon National Ecological Center. The way up to Maaebong is the same as before, with hell of stairs, and the snow piled up, making the hike even more difficult. The height of snow-covered stairs changes randomly, so there is a high risk of stumbling when stepping.I climbed up by pointing with a stick, but it was slightly frozen and there were more cases of missing the point than expected, which was dangerous. The rain turned to snow after a few days and the mountains covered in heavy snow, like mountains that had passed through a typhoon, were not able to withstand the weight of the snow and were dangerous in their own way as broken trees and branches that broke in the wind often fell. There was a case where it fell right above the head, and if it were to happen, it could cause injury to the head or face. The danger of a frozen winter tree is hard to understand unless you have experienced it, but seeing the branches break and fall right in front of my eyes allowed me to feel the danger firsthand. The ridge road from Maaebong to Yeongbong had a lot of snow, so spats were a must. Without spats, you can't stop snow coming through your heels. The danger of hiking in the snow is frostbite. It is a good idea to wear two socks as a basic rule, and it is very important to prevent snow from entering your shoes. If you feel like you have neglected your preparations for winter hiking, I think it would be a wise decision to give up halfway. This is because I came to enjoy the snowy scenery, not to go on an adventure. It is a good idea to bring spats with you when hiking in the winter, just in case, as there are places where your feet may slip off intermittently. If you look down on spats and your feet get stuck in the snow and your socks get wet, then hell begins. The panoramic view of Woraksan Mountain's Yeongbong Peak is better than Taebaeksan Mountain because the surrounding mountains are at least 150 meters lower, and the scenery is very outstanding. However, there is no yew colony or azalea colony like in Taebaek Mountain. You can understand it by saying that it is better based on a simple view.Even when I came in the fall, I was fascinated by the overwhelming surrounding scenery, and this winter, Mt. Worak showed a snowy landscape that exceeded my expectations for hiking. The advantage of returning to the origin of Deokjusa Temple is that you can enjoy both the snowy scenery of climbing Maaebong Peak and the snowy scenery of Yeongbong Peak.It seemed like many of the winter hikers went up to Silleuksa Temple, but since the hiking distance is shorter than Deokjusa Temple, the physical burden seems to be less.Aksan Mountain and Aksan Mountain, but Worak Mountain seems to be an easier mountain compared to Seorak Mountain or Jiri Mountain. What is the reason for Aksan’s reputation? Now that I think about it, I wonder if the staircase hell is the cause? However, since it is not a staircase that takes several hours to climb like the Five Colors Course, it is not difficult if you climb it slowly, looking back and admiring the scenery.Due to the unexpected ambush of the snowy mountains, you must be careful of eye burns caused by strong ultraviolet rays.If there is no snowstorm, it is a good idea to prepare UV-blocking spoglasses, and if there is a snowstorm, snowboarding goggles can be useful. It was a cloudy day with not much sunlight, so I didn't prepare goggles, but I got a slight burn on my eye and felt a foreign body in my eye, which made me uncomfortable for a day and a half.Of course, it is true that it is a more difficult mountain than Taebaeksan Mountain.Taebaeksan Mountain has no hell of stairs and no narrow roads.I also want to let people know that winter hiking requires 1.5 times more physical strength, so if you tackle the snowy landscape unprepared, you could end up in serious trouble.I do some lower body training at the gym on weekdays, but my calves are really tight.I once again realize that hiking is something you shouldn’t do overconfidently.

Moderately sized temple at the start (or finish) of a popular hike in Woraksan National Park. The views here are alright, nothing too spectacular but nothing to scoff at either. Pretty average for mountain temples found at national parks. Not worth going out of your way to see, but if you're hiking in Woraksan odds are your hike will take you past this area, so you might as well stop for a few
