Sangumburi Crater

Sangumburi Crater in Jeju Island is a unique and picturesque flat-bottomed volcanic crater, designated as a Natural Monument, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and diverse plant life within its walls.

Sangumburi Crater (산굼부리) is an impressive and unique volcanic crater located in Jocheon-eup, Jeju City, Jeju Island, South Korea. Designated as Natural Monument No. 263, it’s a popular tourist destination known for its distinct flat-bottomed shape and diverse vegetation.

Key Features:

Maar Volcano: Unlike the typical cone-shaped volcanic craters found on Jeju, Sangumburi is a maar, formed by a volcanic eruption that didn’t produce a significant cone. This makes it relatively flat and wide.

Large Dimensions: The crater boasts a circumference of over 2 kilometers (around 2,070 meters), a width of about 650 meters, and a depth ranging from 100 to 146 meters. From above, it resembles a natural stadium.

Diverse Ecosystem: The inside of the crater is home to a remarkable variety of plant life. The north-facing slope supports a warm-temperate forest with species like red-thorn trees and magnolias, including rare winter strawberries. The south-facing slope features a temperate forest with evergreens, maples, and mountain strawberry trees.

Scientific Significance: The unique botanical environment within the crater attracts researchers due to the coexistence of different vegetation zones in a limited space.

Panoramic Views: While the inside of the crater is protected for its ecological value and generally off-limits to direct descent, the rim offers expansive views of the surrounding plains, distant volcanic cones (oreum), and lush fields, especially beautiful in autumn when covered in eulalia grass.

Easy Access to the Rim: It’s a short and easy walk to reach the crater rim, making it accessible for most visitors.

Sangumburi Crater is a must-see natural wonder on Jeju Island, offering a unique geological formation, diverse plant life, and beautiful scenery with easy access. It’s a great place to appreciate the island’s volcanic past and natural beauty.

This place is magical because it’s very serene and quite. Maybe because it was summer and the foliage is not that enchanting like when it was in autumn/winter season. It’s literally just green grass but I really like the breathtaking scenery thereWhen I went there, I think there were only 4 small groups of tourists. I spent about 2 hours here enjoying the view of the crater, the grass field, and the serene vibes at the top of the hills. There is souvenir and Jeju speciality snacks shop at the entrance. The shopkeeper at the shop was really friendlyI recommend you to come here in autumn season. And make sure to dress lightly because you need to walk uphill. But I think it’s pretty chill uphill even in the late summer season

Volcanic crater about 650 mts in wide. No one is allowed inside the crater. A place worth visiting. It would take you 30 mins in all to see this place.

Amazing and gorgeous forest/park! Can’t believe public park can be so well maintained too. Lots of photo spots and beautiful sights to appreciate and take photos. Suggest to be covered with a good pair of walking shoes as there are some inclined and rocky stones that one need to be careful while walking. Per pax for adult at 6,000 won, while youth at 4,000 won. Was here during winter, think the view during autumn will be even beautiful!! 😍
