Mabangmoksaji

Mabangmoksaji (Mabangmokji Pasture) in Jeju Island is a vast, scenic grassland where horses graze freely, offering beautiful natural landscapes and a peaceful atmosphere.

Mabangmokji (마방목지) is a pasture located on the slopes of Hallasan Mountain in Jeju Island, South Korea. It’s specifically known as a grazing area for Jeju native horses (제주마), which are designated as Natural Monument No. 347.

Key Features:

Home to Jeju Native Horses: Mabangmokji provides a natural environment where you can observe herds of Jeju horses grazing freely. These horses are smaller in stature compared to other breeds and are known for their gentle temperament and resilience.

Scenic Highland Pasture: Situated at an elevation of around 700 meters on the mid-slopes of Hallasan Mountain, the area offers expansive views of the surrounding landscape and a refreshing highland atmosphere.

“Gosumokma” Scenery: The sight of the horses peacefully grazing on the vast green plains, often with Hallasan Mountain as a backdrop, is so picturesque that it’s historically been referred to as one of the “Ten Scenic Wonders of Yeongju” (another name for Jeju) – “Gosumokma” (고수목마), meaning “horses grazing in the wilderness.”

Seasonal Grazing: The horses are typically brought to Mabangmokji for grazing from around April to October or mid-November. During the winter months, they are usually moved to lower areas for their well-being. Therefore, the best time to see the horses here is during the warmer seasons.

Spacious Open Area: The pasture is quite extensive, offering plenty of room for the horses to roam and graze. Visitors can enjoy the wide-open scenery.

Easy Access for Viewing: There are designated areas and walking paths along the perimeter of the pasture, allowing visitors to observe the horses without disturbing them.

Things to Note:

No Horseback Riding: Mabangmokji is primarily a grazing area, and horseback riding or direct interaction with the horses is generally not permitted to protect the animals and their habitat.

Weather Conditions: Being located on a mountainside, the weather can change quickly. It’s advisable to check the forecast before visiting.

Best Time to Visit for Horses: As mentioned, the horses are usually present from spring to autumn. If seeing the horses is your main goal, plan your visit accordingly.

Mabangmokji offers a unique opportunity to witness Jeju’s native horses in their natural environment amidst the beautiful scenery of Hallasan Mountain. It’s a peaceful and picturesque spot that showcases a part of Jeju’s natural and cultural heritage.
