I am writing this review because I came across a deeply unsettling Japanese comment. This place stands as a representation of historical truth and a space of testimony. If you feel it is overly provocative or anti-Japanese, it is because Japan truly committed these actions, not because Korea has distorted history to attack Japan.Japan’s seizure of Korea’s diplomatic sovereignty, the erasure of Korean traditional culture, and the torture and killing of Korean resisters were all results of Imperial Japan’s colonial rule.Claiming that this place is “part of the tragedies of war” is entirely wrong. This history clearly identifies Japan as the aggressor and Korea as the victim.Japan colonized Korea for its own benefit and waged wars that left deep scars on the world.Even today, war criminals are enshrined at Yasukuni Shrine, and some Japanese politicians and citizens continue to honor them. Many modern Japanese people speak of “peace.”But too often, this concept of peace is built on a foundation of silence about the truth.Does minimizing the atrocities of Imperial Japan truly lead to peace?Of course, as you mentioned, the current generation of Japanese people does not need to carry excessive guilt. However, acknowledging history honestly and confronting the fact that Japan was the aggressor in its relationship with Korea is essential.Without this acknowledgment, genuine peace between Korea and Japan will remain out of reach.

Museum about the prison system in korea and particularly the prisoners here during the Japanese regime. They have first-hand statements from political prisoners who detailed their time there to the tortures they received during the regime. The area is big so spend at least an hour or so to explore everything.

I came here for my son's experiential learning. I've been trying to upload it since last time, so I came here this time. This prison was something I always saw when I was young, so I came here in person and it was amazing. It was a historical military place where I could see and feel what Japan did to our independence fighters. The torture room, solitary confinement, is a truly terrible place in history. It is a historical place that every citizen of our country must visit. Please come soon

I have also visited this prison twice; my first visit was around 6 years ago. Everything is still the same since then. This time, they have a self-service ticket machine, which is convenient for customers to buy tickets without waiting in a long line in some situations.

Seodaemun Prison, where I went unintentionally. However, it is a place I would like to take my children to.It made me wonder how hard it must have been for the independence activists to live in a cold prison.I saw the prison in person and the execution site... my heart aches.I hope there will never be another tragedy like this...

Seodaemun Prison History Museum, which I had only seen in history books. I went without much expectations, but I was very surprised by the surrounding park, Dongnimmun Gate, and the spacious Seodaemun Prison. It was better preserved than expected and there was a lot to see about the building. The exhibition hall, which seemed to be a miniature version of Independence Hall and an actual prison, was one of the best historical exhibition halls I've ever been to. Seeing the execution site still there, painful memories from the Japanese colonial era made my heart ache even more.

Really enjoyed this place...it was a well setup museum, maintained beautifully with a very eerie feel to it... there have been some shockingly cruel acts in history which are hard to comprehend... this was a great tour

Excellent museum that spreads out in a huge area. The story told is equally shocking and educational. Not everything is translated to English, but its still understandable.Easy access with metro and multiple buses. Entry fee is very modest.

This will be one of the most unforgettable places I've visited in my life. Definitely a must-visit. I went there on a very cold winter day and could actually emphasize that biting cold once the prisoners have felt here during their custody. The way everywhere felt bright and luminous was also a delusion since guardians used this a psychological pressure to the prisoners as they gave the impression that they could see every movement or any attempt to raid. The way the walls were so high in the execution building was another thing affected me deeply.. They used the walls to hide these execution trials.. And that secret passage...I saw someone said you should visit this place before you leave Korea and I did that on my last days before I left the country. I'm glad I visited this place and saw another face us people have and generally turn our eyes from.

It's a sad place to visit and reminds you the sacrifices that were done for South Korea to be where they are today. A change vs all the prettiness around. Large grounds, not the happiest but its good to understand a bit more on the history behind South Korea.

It's worth the visit. Amazing place that explains the painful but brave history of South Korea. Everything is extremely well explained and the scenes are represented in a very realistic way.
